“Those who criticize without creating, those who are content to defend the vanished concept without being able to give it the forces it needs to return to life, are the plague of philosophy.”

I’m trying to paint a sort of ‘outside sketch’ of Bergson here just to establish some connections. Why Bergson, 3 reasons:

Pragmatism (In its connection to William James and spiritualisms viability.) and the epistemology of James and Bergson.

Memory (Relating to Deleuze, and thinking about how signification and sense start to replace Bergson’s ‘image’)

Replacing any kind of materialism with a radical empiricism and figuring out what RE really is, thru intuition 4 Bergson

Basically, I think Bergson in conjunction with pragmatism helps to dispel some of the flagrancies of historical materialism in its more determinative aspects.I’m gonna be using my own knowledge but also specifically these texts;

A Pluralistic Universe, Pragmatism, Intersecting Lives, Kant’s Critical Philosophy, and Desert Islands

All that I should need knowledge of to really start is Time and Free Will. It introduces ‘duration’. I hope to draw the connection between Bergson’s duration and Deleuze/James ‘pure experience’. If I remember right we often consider the ‘objects’ of inner experience spatially. For example “Im happier now. More happy than I was?” It would seem a bit odd to Bergson to talk about happiness in this way. (Or a multitude of experiences, be it muscle contraction, emotion, pleasure/pain, in short an affectivity). What could we mean by less/more happy in this situation. Let us hold a bit of happiness in our hands. Effectively, we make an object of inner experience. We ‘spatialize’ it. This is why its known as a quantitive measurement, the measurement of space is characterized by an apparent infinite divisibility at this superficial level. This might be him describing something of the sort of problems that Zeno’s paradox may be engendering. In his Desert Islands text on Bergson, Bergson, Deleuze notes Bergson’s main conceptual process surrounding the notions of duration, intuition, matter, and elan vital.
