“Those who criticize without creating, those who are content to defend the vanished concept without being able to give it the forces it needs to return to life, are the plague of philosophy.”

Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guatarri-‘What is Philosophy, 1991

Home-brewed joyful affects.

fragment notes from a dreyfus lecture

Dreyfus is going to make claims on the difference in thinking on time, the self, through the history of the relation Greek thought has to Judeo-Christian.

He’s starting this by articulating the greek view of time as an infinite eternal repetition, and he’s going to compare it to the localized I.e.’ Chosen/historical people if the original hebrews.

Hebrews and greeks are conflicting, then they meet in the god-man who kills the historical to make room for a historical spirit (Similarities to Hegel) then to romanticism and the relation between a knight and his lady (After scholasticism ) then to hegel proper and kierkegaard’s reaction

Truth

Hebrew’s truth = Truth to god = truth to self, the covenant

Greek truth is a universal and rational capacity or ideal connection to it, (Meno, platonic recollection). Makes truth universal and timeless.

Question of outsiders? Can;t become a philo te sophia, the Hebrews are a localized covenant, you cannot (At the beginning of the story; the Hebrews against idol-worshippers, they had no covenant)

Morality

God and his imposition for morality’s sake. Dreyfus brings up euthyphro.

^Socrate’s: Is an action good because its pious, or is it pious because the gods approve.

Aristotle: Plato’s distinction, to we come to or from the principles —- is there a teleological suspension of the ethical? Answer is yes, this is seen in Abraham’s example.

this aporia is what leads to necessity of faith i.e.e unethical actions can have good (God’s) consequences

Christ represents a merger between historical man, and the eternal god. A (In K’s word) ‘new being” is transfmored through Christianity, as the pagan world was transformed with the covenant of ‘The People’ and then it happen when the fallen mam is redeemed through christ

Greek= Get ‘out of time’ universal is higher than the individua, do what every good person would do, reality, get out of time thats good

Truth specific to something local, invovlned personal requirement. Good is what God says you should do. And time is where new things happen and good things happen

Gospel of john – logos =n word of god, jesus as messenger, the god man arrives

Augustine tries to marry platonic rational universe with christianity whoi;e aqunias marries aristotle’s focus on things of world  (Partiular substances

Troubadours start taking european honor ethics with christianity, dante writes about this conflict as beatrice with Christ; wiped out as individual and merged into universal/eternal.
