“Those who criticize without creating, those who are content to defend the vanished concept without being able to give it the forces it needs to return to life, are the plague of philosophy.”

The Rise of the Ancient Mariner Parts 4-5

3–5 minutes

No time for reflection! That is at the end. Let’s dive straight into the questions.

Part IV

The number 7 on his journey of pain is a resolutely Biblical number.

Why is the Mariner made to suffer in the particular way described? How is his suffering related to his shooting of the bird?

His suffering is one of alienation. He is disspate and separated from all the life he sees surrounding him in this new beautiful ocean (The Pacific since he has made his way out of the Antarctic).

Alone, alone, all, all alone

Alone on a wide wide sea!

And never a saint took pity on

My soul in agony.” He has rejected Christ nd therefore his own salvation.

Why does he compare himself to the snakes he describes?

I did not see a direct comparison. I have to be honest, I did look this up. I should not have. Apparently, it’s a fact that his description of sea creatures changes from negative (“Slimy”) to beautifully reared in the light.

Why can’t he pray?

“Wicked Whispers” stop him from doing so. Probably naught but his own conscience for killing the Albatross.

What causes his change of perception of the snakes?
I would assume that it is a kind of glory given to God for the gift of life. The snakes are a reminder that he is. ot simply set adrift among the dead bodies of his former comrades (A dry, materialistic human history full of unjustified pain). Still, the snakes end up becoming a reflection of God’s infinite beauty in his creation. Even the snake, the symbol of man’s fall in the Abrahamic tradition, becomes received as an object of beauty and admiration. The snakes are brought to light! “They coiled and swam, and every track

Was a flash of golden fire.”

“I watched the water-snakes:

They moved in tracks of shining white,

And when they reared, the elfish light

Fell off in hoary flakes.”

Why does a spring of love gush from his heart? What does it meant that he is blessed by the water snakes “unawares”? How can he be unaware when performing what is by definition an intentional act? How and why does his saint get involved in this act?

For aforementioned reasons. He aligns his feelings with God’s grace. I assume the saint is just the symbolic object repreenting this saving grace.

As for being unaware. He is no longer burnded by his hatred, ressentment or isolation, and his love of God becomes an aspect of his life; the nigger part of which we know now, and was accepted the Romantics, is unconscious. Blessings also don’t have to be intentional. Neglect, or unkempt freedom from a parent, for example, is a blessing unto their child, which has negative results. You can give them your “blessing” to do as they please, be the results what they may.

Why can he now pray?
Because he knows who to pray too. Beacuse he has accpeted Loce (Christ) wothin his heart.

Why does the bird fall of his neck?

Because Christ took our sins with him when he went up.

Why does it sink “like lead”?

Because Christ made the ultimate sacrifice. Took on all the pain. An abysmal choice, and a heavy one.

Part V

Why can the Mariner now sleep? Is he forgiven? Why is the dryness removed with water?

I would say he’s forgiven, because the sleep came from Heaven. I don’t know if he is forgiven, however. Uhhhh the dryness is removed becaue water is wet? he was forgiven! He is renewed!

Why does the Mariner feel like a ghost?
He feels like a ghost because his spirit is purified. He has also been drifting on a ship with ghost men for a week, dying of thirst. I might also feel like a ghost. Perhaps a comment on the transitoriness of this world, the importance of the soul and spirit over the body. Which is horseshit.

Why does the air burst into life?

The air burst into life because the shallow drifting of the amriner represented his spiritual lag. Now the sails are full and there is movement (Which is really one of the fundamental marks of life)

Why do the men arise from the dead? Are they forgiven?

Yeah. A whole bunch of dudes supposedly did that when Jesus did.

‘I fear thee, ancient Mariner!’

Be calm, thou Wedding-Guest!

‘Twas not those souls that fled in pain,

Which to their corses came again,

But a troop of spirits blest”

Why is there music imagery?

Music is among the most stimulating phenomena for humans. It is highly emotional and can uplift. It also has a unitary function. As well, the music reawakens happiness in the idea of the bird who, before, was the murdered Albatross alone.
